Translation and interpretation between French and Indonesian are crucial for strengthening students’ linguistic skills and intercultural understanding, enabling effective cross-cultural communication and professional collaboration. While technological advances in machine translation have reshaped the field, human translators and interpreters remain indispensable due to their sensitivity, cultural awareness, and ability to convey nuance, politeness, and artistic style—qualities machines cannot replicate. Interpretation, especially in diplomacy, relies on human interaction to ensure precision and trust in global exchanges. As a transdisciplinary practice, translation connects humanities, social sciences, and applied fields, offering students valuable skills for cultural diplomacy and international careers. At Universitas Gadjah Mada, excellence in French translation is demonstrated by lecturers recognized by the French Embassy and the United Nations, such as Dr. Merry Andriani, alongside experts like Prof. Sajarwa and Dr. Hayatul Cholsy, solidifying UGM’s reputation as Indonesia’s leading institution in this domain.
The Summer School on “Translation and Interpretation in the Global World” in the context of French Language and Literature aims to:
- Provide students of French Language and Literature at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) with the opportunity to gain hands-on learning experiences in translation and interpretation from world-class experts who possess extensive professional experience in translating and interpreting between French and Indonesian.
- Increase the participation of international lecturers and students, particularly from France and Malaysia, in academic learning and cultural exchange activities conducted at UGM, thereby strengthening the university’s international academic network.
- Engage UGM students directly in real-world translation and interpretation practices under the mentorship of established professionals in the field, allowing them to bridge theory and practice through authentic, experiential learning.
- Promote Indonesian cultural diplomacy among international students through translation and interpretation activities that highlight the richness of Indonesian language, literature, and cultural heritage.
This summer school will be conducted on hybrid mode localized at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It has been confirmed that the scholars from abroad will take the seats on this agenda.
